In 1884, Charles Freihofer, the son of German immigrants, opened a bakery establishment in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In a few short years, the Freihofer’s Baking Company was growing rapidly, and his brother and three sons joined the company. In 1912, they built a commercial baking plant in the booming town of Troy, New York. With its 70-foot long traveling bread oven, it was modern, automatic and scientific. They immediately began leaving their fresh baked “Pan Bread” or “French Bread” on the doorsteps of Troy residents, and soon the word was out. When the devastating floods of 1913 hit Troy, the Charles Freihofer Baking Company distributed hundreds of loaves of bread to flood sufferers. It was the beginning of a 75-year commitment to the community. Four generations of the Freihofer family have maintained Charles Freihofer’s commitment to the freshest, purest ingredients in their baked goods, and dedication to their customers. The quest for innovation tied to its home-style imagery has been a cornerstone of their success. And today, Freihofer’s is part of the Bimbo Bakeries USA family, the home of all the fresh baked brands America has loved for generations.
